This is an introduction to public and commercial radio, concentrating on the fundamentals of the programming aspect of radio broadcasting. Students will be taught through lecture and hands-on training. Graduates of the class will have adequate knowledge in order to apply at another radio station, if so desired. The course covers the history of journalism in the world from seventeenth century to the present. Topics to be included: first newspapers and the historical-political conditions that helped the development of the newspapers; regulations relating the press; development of press freedom; the relationship between the press and the political systems; Colonial press; international and national news agencies; history and development of journalism in the Ottoman Empire and in modern Turkey; history and development of journalism in Cyprus. Each student must prepare a six-page newspaper design. The students may work in groups of two or three. However, increases according to her newspaper pages. During the semester, students are attending the class works for news writing and participate in the work of news editing. All of the news materials must be original. End of the semester, each student will present his/her newspaper in front of a jury consisting of faculty members and journalists. The primary goal of this course is to prepare journalism students to the 21st century. The Internet has become not only an important tool for journalists to find information, but it has also become an excellent medium by which to disseminate journalistic products. In this course, the students will practice preparing stories online. The topics covered in this course will include online research and reporting, online story construction, nonlinear story telling, and ethical issues in online journalism.
